Youth on Board Organization (YOBO) plays a crucial role as a member of The Major Group for Children and Youth (MGCY), serving as the UN General Assembly-mandated and self-organized mechanism for young people to engage meaningfully in specific UN processes. YOBO acts as a vital bridge between the youth and the UN system, ensuring the realization of their right to meaningful participation in decision-making processes. This engagement spans the design, implementation, monitoring, follow-up, and review of sustainable development policies at all levels.
MGCY, established through Agenda 21 at the Earth Summit in 1992, operates within the Major Groups and Other Stakeholders (MGoS) mechanism. Over the years, its role and mandate have been reinforced through various General Assembly resolutions, bilateral agreements, and terms of reference with specific UN entities.
This ensures that children and youth are recognized as rights-holders in a wide array of intergovernmental processes, encompassing over 50+ intergovernmental and 200+ multistakeholder initiatives. These include central avenues such as the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF), UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) COP, Economic and Social Council Humanitarian Affairs Segment (ECOSOC HAS), Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), and many others.
Sandra, the Founder of YOBO, along with its members, actively participates in all MGCY-UNEP activities. This involvement extends to policy drafting, attending high-level UN meetings, and organizing numerous webinars dedicated to discussing and shaping youth policies. YOBO’s commitment to youth engagement ensures that the voices of young people are heard and considered in critical decision-making processes related to sustainable development and environmental policies.
The organization’s dedication to fostering the active involvement of youth reflects a broader commitment to building a more inclusive and sustainable future.
